An update to my Reddit posting strategy

Hello everyone, I'm Flygohr - a full-time digital artist, writer, and NFT creator with a passion for worldbuilding. As a multi-disciplinary creative, I'm excited to share the latest updates from my world, including art commissions, online shops, and more. Let's get started!

  • On top of my art commissions services, I also offer mentorships, advice, and networking opportunities to fellow creatives. Just get in touch with me using my email info@flygohr.com

As a digital artist who has been working in the field for years, I have had the pleasure of connecting with many individuals who share a passion for creativity and self-expression. One of the most significant challenges I have encountered in my journey is finding ways to consistently promote my work and generate new opportunities for commissions.

In the past, I have shared tips and advice on how to use Reddit effectively as a platform for attracting potential clients. One of my most popular posts is a guide on how to post on Reddit to get art commissions. However, as I tried to get back into doing commissions in November, I noticed that the market is a lot less active. This observation was confirmed by other artists in the field, who were also struggling to generate new leads.

The current economic crisis, coupled with inflation, made me realize that art commissions are luxury products. Duh. As a result, I felt the need to be more aggressive with my Reddit posting strategy to ensure that I am still able to attract potential clients and generate income.

In this article, I will be sharing some updates on my Reddit posting strategy, including new techniques and approaches that have proven effective in generating leads and securing new clients.

Reaching out is as important as posting

When it comes to attracting new clients on Reddit, simply posting "commissions open" is no longer enough. In today's market, there are too many artists vying for attention, and clients often post their requests without looking at available artists. Therefore, it's up to you as the artist to scout for these requests and proactively reach out to potential clients.

One way to do this is by searching for client posts on relevant subreddits. For example, if you specialize in D&D art, you can use the following search query on r/DnDart:

subreddit:DnDart flair:"Looking To Commission" NOT title:"[For Hire]" NOT title:"[OC]"

Update the sorting to new to see the most recent posts first. This will help you to filter out irrelevant posts and identify potential clients who are actively seeking artists.

However, sifting through posts can be a time-consuming process, which is why I'm currently working on an article that outlines how to automate this process. Stay tuned for more updates on this in the future.

Make “art shares” part of your posting routine

Another way to boost your visibility on Reddit is to make "art shares" a regular part of your posting routine. These posts showcase your artwork without explicitly advertising your availability for commissions.

Art shares are permitted on all subreddits, but there may be some restrictions on frequency and timing. To manage your art shares, you can use the same database structure outlined in that previous article. It will help you to schedule your posts and ensure a consistent flow of content.

Whenever you have new artwork, whether it's a work in progress or a finished piece, make it a habit to share it on Reddit in their relevant communities. If the piece is good, it will naturally attract attention and drive traffic to your profile. This is where you should have a pinned post outlining your commission services.

In fact, I've found that posting art shares generates more leads than simply advertising "commissions open." By sharing your artwork regularly, you build a stronger following and increase your chances of attracting potential clients. So don't underestimate the power of art shares in promoting your work and growing your business.

Revamp your onboarding process

If you want to stand out from the crowd and make a lasting impression on potential clients, it's important to revamp your onboarding process. One way to do this is by creating a highly professional portfolio that showcases your best work and highlights your unique style and skills.

To build a portfolio that truly impresses, consider using some of the tips outlined in my portfolio-building guide. Additionally, it can be helpful to look at other artists' portfolios, including mine, to get a sense of what works well and what doesn't. Here are some examples:

  • Rengin’s portfolio website

  • Nika Lemut’s portfolio website

  • Art of Bob Kehl

It's also crucial to ensure that your copy is well-written and professional. Clients appreciate a well-designed and informative website that accurately reflects your expertise and experience. By taking the time to perfect your portfolio and copy, you can demonstrate your professionalism and increase your chances of landing new clients.

I also completely re-written my comments and default replies, and created new images that showcase my artistic range to post on Reddit.

Great article. I am glad that I am not the only one that feels commissions are slower than usual.
